ABOUT US

In partnership with inner-city community leaders, the Knoxville – Oak Ridge Central Labor Council has established Youth-to-Unions JobSquad to increase outreach and recruitment of inner-city young people, people of color, women and veterans for earn-as-you-learn union apprenticeships and placement in top-paying union jobs. 

JobSquad is a KORCLC project to develop and implement a union apprenticeship outreach and recruitment program to:

  • Increase opportunities for individual and family financial stability through workforce training and placement in stable, well-paying union jobs.

  • Increase awareness among inner city youth about trade union apprenticeship opportunities.

  • Raise the profile of unions among communities of color.

  • Identify and address barriers to employment, e.g. transportation, etc...

  • Set and achieve measurable goals for:

    • Community engagement and outreach events​

    • Apprenticeship recruitment of people of color, women and veterans

Outreach and Engagement Coordinator

The JobSquad is currently seeking to fill a part-time contract position for an Inner-City Community Engagement Coordinator for grassroots outreach, engagement, and recruitment to achieve JobSquad 2023 objectives. Successful execution of this contract is expected to lead to a full time staff position or a full time contract within the next year.

 

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; reliable transportation; extensive network of personal relationships with inner-city Knoxville residents and understanding of their face-to-face and digital social networks; task-oriented and organized; demonstrated ability to effectively and persuasively communicate in one-on-one, public speaking, and social media settings; commitment to the labor movement mission to improve the lives of working people by bringing economic justice to the workplace, financial stability to individuals and families, and social justice to our communities.

 

Deliverables:

  •  Participate in development and implementation of the Youth to Unions JobSquad Strategic Plan

 

  • Assist Project Development Coordinator and other contract staff in centralizing information on apprenticeship and job placement opportunities between union locals and targeted underserved communities, to increase apprenticeship diversity and labor-community engagement.

 

  • Coordinate with JobSquad Committee and apprenticeship program reps to develop and implement outreach and recruitment plans with measurable outcomes.

 

  • Develop and implement strategic distribution of outreach campaign materials (flyers, brochures, digital, etc…)

 

  • Coordinate/oversee distribution and return/submission of apprenticeship applications and tracking of applicants.

 

  • Assist targeted digital campaign development (Web, SM).

 

  •  I.D. and attend community events and secure recruitment opportunities at these events.

 

  •  Contact and equip targeted grassroots leaders and potential applicants with apprenticeship and job placement info.

 

  • Coordinate Youth and Union Job Squad volunteer opportunities.
